How old is that photograph?
Date an old photograph to help fit a photo into the family tree (Roger
Vaughan Picture Library).
Dating Photos
Most old photos can be
dated with reasonable certainty to within a period of ten years. In some
cases they can of course be dated to the exact day, if someone has bothered
to record that information on the photo! Sadly almost all 19th century
family portraits in albums are unidentified and undated! So in most cases a
little detective work must be done.

History of the N.U.M.
Under conditions where
children as young as four had to face a seventeen-hour day and a six-day
week working underground, the District Unions (forerunners of the Miners’
Federation of Great Britain and the National Union of Mineworkers)
were established to protect the interests and the lives of miners. In
the pits of Sheffield there was concerted action in 1792 when colliers
employed by the Duke of Norfolk refused to work until their wages were
raised. There are many examples of miners’ secret organisations taking
industrial action.

History of Ragged Schools in Britain
In 1818 John Pounds began
teaching poor children without charging fees. Thomas Guthrie helped to
promote his idea of free schooling for working class children. Guthrie
started a ragged school in Edinburgh and Sheriff Watson established another
in Aberdeen. Lord Shaftesbury formed the Ragged School Union in 1844
and over the next eight years over 200 free schools for poor children were
established in Britain.
Blue Coat Schools
Charity Schools, also called
Blue Coat Schools, originally a type of elementary school erected and
maintained in various parishes, by the voluntary contributions of the
inhabitants, for teaching poor children to read, write, and other necessary
parts of education. They were usually maintained by religious organizations.
School Attendance Medals
Attendance at school had
always been a problem. Children would normally have to work from a young
age. A child’s wages could mean the difference between hunger and starvation
for a family. The Sandon Act of 1876 and the Mundella Act of 1880 made
education compulsory throughout England. These medals, the silver were
awarded for good conduct and attendance for three years and gold after four
years.

statistics of education, was of the opinion that of 16,500 children of the
working-class who are in a position to attend school, scarcely 6,500 can read.
This comes of the fact that the children are taken from school in the seventh,
and, at the very latest, in the twelfth year, and that the teachers are good for
nothing; one was a convicted thief who found no other way of supporting himself
after being released from jail than teaching school! Immorality among young
people seems to be more prevalent in Sheffield than anywhere else."

Enclosures / Inclosure Act
There were a number of
UK Acts of Parliament, which enclosed
common land (see
also open field system) in the country. This meant that the
rights that people once held, to graze animals on these areas when not
planted by crops, were now being denied. Common usage is
enclosure, but this is not the name of
the acts. Inclosure Acts for small areas had been
passed sporadically since the 12th century but the vast majority of them
were passed between 1750 and 1860. See samples of
private and personal acts of Parliament.
Domesday Book
A great land survey from 1086,

resources being owned in England at the time, and the extent of the taxes he
could raise. The information collected was recorded by hand in two huge
books, in the space of around a year. See also
Domesday Book FAQ's. Planning for
the
surveys was conducted in 1085 to cover
six 'circuits'.

Boer Wars
There were two Boer Wars.
The
first between 1880 to 1881 and the
second between 1899 to 1902.
Both were between the British Empire and the Boer republics, the Orange Free
State and the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic), founded by
settlers known as Voortrekkers who made the Great Trek from the Cape Colony
and were primarily of Dutch, French and German origin. These settlers
were often called Boers and were mainly the descendants of generations of
Afrikaans who were living the Eastern Cape frontier. The ware often
called simply the "Boer War" is the Second Boer War. See
Roll of Honour - Boer
dedicated to those men and women who fell fighting for their country.
Boer War
- Empire Involvement
The vast
majority of troops fighting for the United Kingdom came from the UK or South
Africa. However, in the Second Boer War (South Africa War) a number did come
from other parts of the Empire. These countries had their own internal
disputes over whether they should remain tied to the United Kingdom, or have
full independence, which carried over into the debate over whether they
should send forces to assist the United Kingdom. Though not fully
independent on foreign affairs, these countries did have local say over how
much support to provide, and the manner in which it would be provided.
Ultimately,
Canada,
Australia and
New Zealand all chose to send
volunteers to aid the United Kingdom, but did not send them in sufficient
size and speed to be critical to the final outcome. See also
