Yorkshire and wapentake of Claro, consists of two adjoining villages, High
Harrowgate, in the parish of Knaresborough, and Low Harrowgate in the parish

British History Online - Harrogate
A celebrated watering-place,
comprising the villages of High and Low Harrogate. This place, which
is within the limits of the ancient forest of Knaresborough, derives it
name, originally Heywraygate, from its situation on the road from
Knaresborough to Heywray, now Haverah Park; and, prior to the discovery of
its mineral waters, consisted only of a few farmhouses and widely scattered
cottages on a barren heath. About the year 1571, Captain Slingsby, of
Scriven, after his return from Westphalia, found a spring in the forest of
Knaresborough, which resembled, in its properties, the waters from which he
had derived much benefit abroad; this spring is now the source of the old
Harrogate spa. The Tewit Well was subsequently discovered, and both
the springs gradually attracted public notice for nearly a century before
any provisions were made for the reception of the increasing number of
visitors, till, in the year 1687, an inn, now the "Queen," was erected for
their accommodation, to which another, now the "Royal Oak," was subsequently
added. See also their main website for additional

The Iron District of Staffordshire
The Remaining Branches of Industry - "He who is once a grinder falls into
despair, as though he had sold himself to the devil. Education in Sheffield
is upon a very low plane; a clergyman, who had occupied himself largely with
the statistics of education, was of the opinion that of 16,500 children of
the working-class who are in a position to attend school, scarcely 6,500 can
read. This comes of the fact that the children are taken from school in the
seventh, and, at the very latest, in the twelfth year, and that the teachers
are good for nothing; one was a convicted thief who found no other way of
supporting himself after being released from jail than teaching school!
Immorality among young people seems to be more prevalent in Sheffield than
anywhere else."

Enclosures / Inclosure Act
There were a number
of UK Acts of Parliament, which enclosed
common land
(see
also open field system) in the country. This meant that the
rights that people once held, to graze animals on these areas when not
planted by crops, were now being denied. Common usage is
enclosure, but this is not the name of
the acts. Inclosure Acts for small areas had been
passed sporadically since the 12th century but the vast majority of them
were passed between 1750 and 1860. See samples of
private and personal acts of Parliament.

Dating Photos
Most old photos can be
dated with reasonable certainty to within a period of ten years. In some
cases they can of course be dated to the exact day, if someone has bothered
to record that information on the photo! Sadly almost all 19th century
family portraits in albums are unidentified and undated! So in most cases a
little detective work must be done.

Ripley Castle
Home of the Ingilby family for
the last seven hundred years. Our history is one of political, military,
religious and social turbulence, of plague and persecution, of renaissance,
enlightenment and industrial revolution. It is a tale of romance, courage,
loyalty and recklessness. Henry Ingilby collected taxes for Edward III and
helped the king to finance the construction of Windsor Castle. His brother
Thomas saved the king's life and was knighted for his courage.
Hazlewood Castle
Hazlewood Castle has
been in the family estate of the Vavasours since Norman times and was mentioned
in the Domesday Book in 1086.
Studley House Farm
In times past, it would
only have been the aristocracy who could stay in a historic 19th Century
farmhouse in beautiful countryside, on the site of an ancient Royal Forest, and
close to what is possibly England's smallest stately home - a veritable English
Chateau. But today you can enjoy this same privilege at Studley House Farm in
the North Yorkshire village of Ebberston, away from the bustle of everyday life.
The Bar Convent, York
The Bar Convent is the
oldest living convent in England, established in 1686. It now offers a variety
of award winning facilities for the general public, businesses and historians
alike. There is a fascinating museum bringing the history of the Bar Convent to
life. The beautiful chapel is open throughout the day and serious research
students may apply for access to the extensive library & archives.

History of the N.U.M.
Under conditions where
children as young as four had to face a seventeen-hour day and a six-day week
working underground, the District Unions (forerunners of the Miners’ Federation
of Great Britain and the National Union of Mineworkers) were established
to protect the interests and the lives of miners. In the pits of Sheffield
there was concerted action in 1792 when colliers employed by the Duke of Norfolk
refused to work until their wages were raised. There are many examples of
miners’ secret organisations taking industrial action.

Harrogate Grammar School
Harrogate Grammar School was
founded in 1903 as the Municipal Secondary Day School of Harrogate and, by
1931, had achieved Grammar School status. The original premises in the
centre of Harrogate had long been outgrown as the original roll of 44 pupils
had grown to 530. Work began on the 'new' Grammar School in Arthurs Avenue,
to which the staff and pupils transferred in 1933. World War II evacuees
swelled the numbers to 900. See also the official site at
Harrogate Grammar School.
Ripon Grammar School
Claimed to originate in Saxon
times, it was refounded in the reign of Queen Mary in 1555. The school
became coeducational in the 1960s. Although most pupils are day-pupils from
Ripon itself, there are attached, separate, boys and girls boarding houses.
Notable old Riponians include: David George Kendall the statistician, Beilby
Porteus, Georgian Bishop of Chester and London, William Stubbs the Victorian
Bishop of Oxford, fashion designer Bruce Oldfield, the local MP David Curry
(head boy 1962), and Richard Hammond, television presenter. See also

Girls High School in 2005 to become the Grammar School at Leeds. A
physical merger, however, to be put back a year until September 2008.

In 1818 John Pounds began
teaching poor children without charging fees. Thomas Guthrie helped to
promote his idea of free schooling for working class children. Guthrie
started a ragged school in Edinburgh and Sheriff Watson established another
in Aberdeen. Lord Shaftesbury formed the Ragged School Union in 1844 and
over the next eight years over 200 free schools for poor children were
established in Britain.
Blue Coat Schools
Charity Schools, also called
Blue Coat Schools, originally a type of elementary school erected and
maintained in various parishes, by the voluntary contributions of the
inhabitants, for teaching poor children to read, write, and other necessary
parts of education. They were usually maintained by religious organizations.

School Attendance Medals
Attendance at school had
always been a problem. Children would normally have to work from a young
age. A child’s wages could mean the difference between hunger and starvation
for a family. The Sandon Act of 1876 and the Mundella Act of 1880 made
education compulsory throughout England. These medals, the silver were
awarded for good conduct and attendance for three years and gold after four
years.

Boer Wars
There were two Boer Wars.
The
first between 1880 to 1881 and the
second between 1899 to 1902.
Both were between the British Empire and the Boer republics, the Orange Free
State and the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic), founded by
settlers known as Voortrekkers who made the Great Trek from the Cape Colony
and were primarily of Dutch, French and German origin. These settlers
were often called Boers and were mainly the descendants of generations of
Afrikaans who were living the Eastern Cape frontier. The ware often
called simply the "Boer War" is the Second Boer War. See
Roll of Honour - Boer
dedicated to those men and women who fell fighting for their country.
Boer War
- Empire Involvement
The vast
majority of troops fighting for the United Kingdom came from the UK or South
Africa. However, in the Second Boer War (South Africa War) a number did come
from other parts of the Empire. These countries had their own internal
disputes over whether they should remain tied to the United Kingdom, or have
full independence, which carried over into the debate over whether they
should send forces to assist the United Kingdom. Though not fully
independent on foreign affairs, these countries did have local say over how
much support to provide, and the manner in which it would be provided.
Ultimately,
Canada,
Australia and
New Zealand all chose to send
volunteers to aid the United Kingdom, but did not send them in sufficient
size and speed to be critical to the final outcome. See also
