Old Towns, Leeds Yorkshire
Leeds, the principal emporium of the woollen
manufactures, is the most populous borough and market-town in Yorkshire.
It is highly probable that Leeds was a
Roman station, for Roman remains have been found in various parts of
the town.
British History Online - Leeds
LEEDS (St. Nicholas), a
parish, in the union of Hollingbourne, hundred of Eyhorne, lathe of
Aylesford, W. division of Kent, 5 miles (E. by S.) from Maidstone;
containing 675 inhabitants. The parish is said to have derived its name from
Ledian, councillor to Ethelbert II., who built a fortress here in 978.
LEEDS (St. Peter), a parish, and liberty, in the W. riding of York,
comprising the market-town and borough of Leeds, which has a separate
jurisdiction, but is locally in the wapentake of Skyrack. See also their

The Iron District of Staffordshire
The Remaining Branches of Industry - "He who is once a grinder falls into
despair, as though he had sold himself to the devil. Education in Sheffield
is upon a very low plane; a clergyman, who had occupied himself largely with
the statistics of education, was of the opinion that of 16,500 children of
the working-class who are in a position to attend school, scarcely 6,500 can
read. This comes of the fact that the children are taken from school in the
seventh, and, at the very latest, in the twelfth year, and that the teachers
are good for nothing; one was a convicted thief who found no other way of
supporting himself after being released from jail than teaching school!
Immorality among young people seems to be more prevalent in Sheffield than
anywhere else."

Poor Laws
The origins of
parochial poor relief extend back at least as far as the fifteenth century.
Legislation prior to this point largely dealt with beggars and vagabonds. In
the aftermath of the Black Death (1348-9) labour was in short supply and
wages rose steeply. This site provides detailed information on the Old
and New Poor Laws including Poor Rate, Badging the Poor, Bastardy Orders,
Farming the Poor and much more.

History of Human Rights in
Europe
Information on the history of human rights in Europe.
Enclosures / Inclosure Act
There were a number of
UK Acts of Parliament, which enclosed
common land (see
also open field system) in the country. This meant that the
rights that people once held, to graze animals on these areas when not
planted by crops, were now being denied. Common usage is
enclosure, but this is not the name of
the acts. Inclosure Acts for small areas had been
passed sporadically since the 12th century but the vast majority of them
were passed between 1750 and 1860. See samples of

Domesday Book
A great land survey from 1086,
commissioned by William the Conqueror to assess the extent of the land and
resources being owned in England at the time, and the extent of the taxes he
could raise. The information collected was recorded by hand in two huge
books, in the space of around a year. See also

six 'circuits'.

Leeds War Memorial
The figure of Victory was
damaged in a storm in the 1960's, and was removed to a public cemetery. 20
years later it was melted down by the local council and now only the head
remains at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds.

How old is that photograph?
Date an old photograph to help fit a photo into the family tree (Roger
Vaughan Picture Library).
Dating Photos
Most old photos can be
dated with reasonable certainty to within a period of ten years. In some
cases they can of course be dated to the exact day, if someone has bothered
to record that information on the photo! Sadly almost all 19th century
family portraits in albums are unidentified and undated! So in most cases a
little detective work must be done.

Hazlewood Castle
Hazlewood Castle has
been in the family estate of the Vavasours since Norman times and was mentioned
in the Domesday Book in 1086.
Studley House Farm
In times past, it would
only have been the aristocracy who could stay in a historic 19th Century
farmhouse in beautiful countryside, on the site of an ancient Royal Forest, and
close to what is possibly England's smallest stately home - a veritable English
Chateau. But today you can enjoy this same privilege at Studley House Farm in
the North Yorkshire village of Ebberston, away from the bustle of everyday life.
The Bar Convent, York
The Bar Convent is the
oldest living convent in England, established in 1686. It now offers a variety
of award winning facilities for the general public, businesses and historians
alike. There is a fascinating museum bringing the history of the Bar Convent to
life. The beautiful chapel is open throughout the day and serious research
students may apply for access to the extensive library & archives.
Harewood House
Harewood House, home to the Queen's cousin, the Earl of Harewood is set in
spectacular grounds, which include formal gardens and gentle woodland walks.

the Tolpuddle Martyrs in the early 1830s to the first meeting of the Trades
Union Congress in 1868.
History of the N.U.M.
Under conditions where
children as young as four had to face a seventeen-hour day and a six-day
week working underground, the District Unions (forerunners of the Miners’
Federation of Great Britain and the National Union of Mineworkers)
were established to protect the interests and the lives of miners. In
the pits of Sheffield there was concerted action in 1792 when colliers
employed by the Duke of Norfolk refused to work until their wages were
raised. There are many examples of miners’ secret organisations taking
industrial action.

Salvation Army
In 1865, William Booth founded
an Evangelical Christian movement in the East End of London. Originally known as
the Christian Revival Association, it was renamed in 1870 to become the East
London Christian Mission, subsequently shortened to the Christian Mission. The
group was reorganised and renamed in 1878 to become the Salvation Army —
affectionately known as the "Sally Ann".
